The Road Not Taken
By: Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. 20

Unit Two Reflections
In the Mary Cassatt studio, I chose to visually represent the relationship with my two best friends from high school. The photography I used was from my best friend's wedding a year ago. It displays a time where one of us was going through a major life change, but our friendship stayed the same. I incorporated print in the background of hearts, and I created a stamp with an infinity sign with the word soul mates on the edge. I felt the symbol and the heart print displayed the strong relationship we all have, and always will. The bride has been my best friend since we were sixteen, and gone through a lot in her life. Although, I don't know exactly how she felt, our close relationship has taught me about empathy. Because I care about her so much, I have learned how important empathy is. Pink(2005) states, "Empathy is the ability to imagine yourself in someone else's position and to intuit what that person is feeling."(p,159). Empathy is the root of our friendship and is what has made it so strong. This studio helped me visually represent the meaning of our relationship.
In the Rene Magritte studio, the images that were chosen for my post card reminded me of the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. I chose to put the image of the girl and the guitar on one side of the road and a flower on the other to signify a type of independence or journey the girl chose to take. I have felt this way before, and can relate to the girl in the image. There have been times in my life, where I made decisions that weren't the norm or accepted by the people in my life, but I chose them because they were decisions I needed to make for my own happiness. This image represents the relationship that I have with myself, where everyday I need to do what is best for me.
In the Do Ho Suh studio, I chose to represent the relationship of home. Home to me is not a place, but where I feel loved and welcomed. I chose images of my mother, and dog placed in the windows of the house to display that they are my home. My literal home is in St. Louis, and to me, it will always be a place I will feel at peace. For a long time in my life, I took for granted having a home, and having a place were people unconditionally loved me. After leaving for college, I realized how lucky I was to have these things. It's not about the home or the place, but the my family and friends. No matter where they are, they are my home.
In Pink(2005), the author states there is a third form of happiness which is "...knowing what your highest strengths are and deploying them in the service of something larger than you are"(p.226). I feel that this studios represents this idea, because we were ask to define the meaning of relationships in our lives. I think that any of these studios would be amazing to bring into my classroom, but the one that I really connected with was the Rene Magritte studio. I feel like this is a collaborative project that would build a sense of community in the classroom with the students because they are all a part of the students work. Because each student doesn't get to pick their own images, they have to critically think about what meaning they can create from the subconscious. These students are a great way to get students critically thinking about meaning in all subjects, and experimenting with the idea of empathy can help them in subjects like social studies.
